Honoring Bob Cherrington’s Vision

Robert “Bob” Cherrington was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935 and raised in New Hyde Park on Long Island. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School before earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from St. Lawrence University in 1957. He later completed his Master’s degree in Education at SUNY Albany.

Bob devoted his career to teaching Social Studies at Brockport High School from 1960-1992, where he taught American History, Government, Economics, Advanced Placement, and Regents courses. Over the course of his career, he taught hundreds of Brockport students and remembered many of them long after graduation.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Bob was deeply involved in educational leadership and advocacy. He served for several years as President of the Brockport Teachers’ Association and was actively engaged with the New York State United Teachers’ Union, working to support educators and strengthen schools.

Affectionately known by students as “Captain Bob,” he made learning engaging, meaningful, and fun — a nickname he embraced throughout his later years.

He had a remarkable ability to connect with students, remember them long after graduation, and inspire curiosity, confidence, and critical thinking. He loved to tell stories, debate ideas, and share his wealth of knowledge, always with a witty sense of humor.

In retirement, Bob became an avid walker and could often be seen on Main Street in Brockport, happily stopping to chat with former students and members of the community. He was known for his intelligence, kindness, humor, and deep devotion to learning.

Before his passing on July 28, 2024, Bob ensured that his commitment to students would continue through the creation of the Robert B. Cherrington Education Fund — a final act of generosity rooted in everything he valued.

Through this fund, his lifelong dedication to education continues to support Brockport Central School District graduates as they pursue higher education and meaningful futures.
